TRAVEL AND TRANSPORTATION

Killen, Alabama is a small town due east of Florence, Alabama about one to eight miles. How far from Florence depends upon which part of the Florence city limit is used as the measuring point. For those arriving from out of town, air, automobile, and mixed mode (fly/drive) are your options.

AIR: The metropolitan area (Florence, Sheffield, Tuscumbia, Muscle Shoals, and a number of smaller towns) is served by Northwest Airlines. All connections are through Memphis, Tennessee, in a Saab Turboprop seating about 30 people. Several major rental companies have cars available at the airport, at least in theory. Ask a lot of questions if you are booking a car. We will also arrange to have flights met by someone if you are flying in and do not want to rent a car.

AUTOMOBILE: The Darby residence and the Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club are located adjacent to each other on US Highway 72 just east of Shoal Creek, in Killen, Alabama, directly across from the Winn-Dixie shopping center, and less than a mile west of the town's single streetlight. A small map was sent with some invitations. We recommend mapquest.com as the best way to get directions. The North Alabama Official Visitors Guide has a web site (www.northalabama.org) that has good regional maps. Local maps can be found on the Florence/Lauderdale Tourism web site (www.flo-tour.org). The most convenient motels are about five miles further east along US 72.

FLY/DRIVE: Flying into a major airport and renting a car is often cheaper and offers more carrier options. Killen/Florence can be reached by flying into Huntsville, Alabama (60 miles), Nashville, Tennessee (120 miles), Birmingham, Alabama (120 miles), and Memphis, Tennessee (135 miles). The first three will take you north or south on I-65 to US 72, and thence about 35 miles west.
